Airbnb host explains why he gives his guests as few checkout instructions as possible

An Airbnb host is praised after sharing his extremely simple list of rules.

John-Michael Thomas (@jamikeymike) posted the statement on TikTok, where it has now garnered hundreds of thousands of views. Its "simple" list of checkout instructions includes just one step: close the door before you leave.

"Yes it is, that's all you have to do," he said of the rule. "Close the door. Try to remember to lock it."

The video came in response to a comment from another TikToker, who complained about the "horrible" cleaning fees and complicated checkout rules they faced when using Airbnb.

In recent months, Airbnb customers have inundated TikTok with similar complaints. Earlier this year, a TikToker named Amanda (@amanda_wanders) claimed she received a negative review from her host for requesting extra toilet paper.

Recently, a user named Jet (@thefamousjet) posted a video poking fun at hosts' convoluted rule lists. The video was a parody, but it immediately sparked thousands of complaints from Airbnb guests, many of whom said Jet wasn't exaggerating.

"For 2 nights we pay $500-$600 to look after someone's apartment," wrote one commenter.

"At this point we should all just go back to staying in hotels," added another.

Thomas's video, meanwhile, was praised for the same reason

Jet's video sparked so much anger. At the end of his clip, he directly insults hosts who make things difficult for their guests.

"You're on vacation," he said. "You're not a housekeeper. The hosts doing this chore drive me crazy.”

Airbnb's website includes a guide for hosts to use when creating their check-in and check-out procedures. Above all, the service suggests that hosts should be extremely clear when setting cleaning rules, checkout times, and closing instructions.

“For some hosts, checkout simply means asking guests to close the door behind them and enjoy their journey home. Other hosts leave detailed cleaning instructions. Whatever your hosting style, making sure your expectations for guest checkout are clearly communicated is key to ending their stay on a positive note,” the post reads in part.

Still, many commenters on Thomas's video agreed with his sentiment - and wondered why guests should even be asked to clean.

"Imagine walking into a hotel and then having to clean the room like a pro before you leave," wrote one user.
