Hobart with all that the charming Tassie capital city has to offer is just a short drive.

Things to do in Blackman's Bay, Tasmania

Down Tinderbox Rd in Blackmans Bay is Fossil Cove Drive then take a short 600m walk (250-300m of steps) to Fossil Cove.

Fossil Cove Conservation Area is a historically significant and utterly beautiful place to spend a day in Southern Tasmania. Dating back 250 million years ago, the protected area shows the world that once was with fossils scattered all over the pebbly oasis and engraved in the rocky shore. It's a favourite place in Tasmania to watch a pastel-coloured sunset with the scenic arch and cliffs of Blackmans Bay that delicately add to this spot's renowned untouched beauty. In this secluded spot, you can view a range of fossils, as well as the beautiful surrounds, and the archway into a second enclosed cove. Head through the arch if the tide is down, and the weather is clear, and enjoy the isolation and the sights. Be aware the steps up can be a bit tricky and steep, but a fabulous secret, so close to Hobart.

Just off Blackman's Bay an easy, well-defined path meanders through blue gum forest, bushland and coastal headland to Baronia Beach. Tucked behind a cliff and crowned by tall trees, Baronia Beach is a hidden gem that provides a bit of isolation for a romantic escape. It's also great for a family swim.

The beach is a bit rocky, but the towering sandstone cliffs give you the feeling that you found something special tucked away from the world. The waters are crystal clear and you'll be able to see all sorts of marine life nestled in the rocks. And a snorkel may reveal sea dragons. You can also pop up onto a rock near the shore to throw in a line. And while the flat track is suitable for most, there are some steps down to the beach at the end of the path.

Behind the beach, you'll notice a historic site. That's the 1900-built Baronia Hotel. Business was good for the old hotel when Hobart residents would be ferried down to the Kingston jetty. Patrons would wander the hotel's garden after sipping tea above the beach. But you can share the same view of the Derwent River's eastern shore and the Iron Pot from Baronia Beach.
