Destination - Copper Coast, Yorke Pensinsula, South Australia

The Copper Coast is named obviously after the extractive industries it hosts, including limestone, granite, dolomite, gypsum, sand mining and of course copper. The Peninsula's three largest urban centres of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo make up the Copper Coast, which is also known as 'Australia's Little Cornwall'. Copper was first found in 1859 at Wallaroo Mines near Kadina. The population in this area quickly grew and the town of Kadina was surveyed in 1861. Only 148 kilometres from Adelaide, Kadina is the largest town on the Yorke Peninsula and is the main commercial centre for a very prosperous agricultural region.

Wallaroo is 160 kms from Adelaide, a 90-minute drive that takes you up to the stunning Copper Coast. Wallaroo has a long history and was once the busiest port in South Australia with its mining and smelting activities. It is now a popular tourist destination and a lovely day drive from Adelaide. Wallaroo offers beautiful beaches, boating and fishing and many historical sites to visit. Moonta is steeped in history and just 165 kilometres from Adelaide, Moonta was South Australia's second-largest town in its heyday. Extremely fortuitously, a shepherd noticed traces of copper on a wombat burrow, which led to the establishment of the Moonta Mining Company which soon became one of the richest copper mines in Australia.

The ensuing flood of skilled miners from Cornwall changed South Australia's cultural mix, bringing with them their mining techniques, labour practices, architecture and the Methodist religion. The three towns are the home of the world's largest Kernewek Lowender, the world's largest Cornish Festival which has been held every two years since 1973. Apart from contributing to an economic explosion, the immigrants brought the delicious Cornish pastie. Today, one of the things Moonta is most famous for is its Cornish pasties which can be found at the local bakeries and cafes.
