19 February 1942, more than 188 Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin's harbour and airfield. It was the first and the largest foreign attack ever mounted on Australia. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin, the Defense of Darwin Experience open at the Darwin Military Museum. It tells the story of an extraordinary, but a little known chapter in Australian history, the life in the Northern Territory during World War II, of the contribution made in northern Australia to the war effort, and experience first-hand accounts of the 1942 bombing a traumatic event that changed Darwin forever. Enjoy a modern experience of an iconic, historical story of the Northern Territories, Royal Flying Doctors at the Royal Flying Doctors Tourist Facility. Hear the heroic tales, learn about the history and the activities of the RFDS’s pilots, engineers, doctors and nurses, and the experiences of the patients that are carried and cared for each day via virtual reality, life-size hologram, touch screen portals, storyboard, interactive games and digital painting check out an RFDS aircraft, pedal radio.
