Destination - Jervis Bay, New South Wales

If you are looking for the whitest sand beach in the world, then head to Jervis BayHyams Beach has laid claim to the title and visitors flock there for Insta worthy shots with one of the world’s most picturesque backdrops.

Surrounded by National Park and a protected marine park, Jervis Bay is as untouched as a popular tourist spot can get. The township of Huskisson is the main centre where you’ll find all the necessities this quiet beachside retreat needs to keep holidaymakers smiling.

BEST TIME TO GO TO JERVIS BAY

If you are after time in the sun, salt and sand then summer is the best time to visit Jervis Bay. The days are long, evenings are balmy, and the water is turquoise. Spring and autumn are also great options but keep in mind that it’s a popular family destination especially during school holiday periods and long weekends. Being three hours from Sydney makes it a popular weekend escape too. Winter, from June to August is cool especially in the evenings and early mornings. Whale watchers flock here during the annual whale migration. Prime times are June and July as well as September to early November.

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN JERVIS BAY

You can find yourself the ultimate beach holiday home at Jervis Bay. Choose from one of the beachside villages of Hyams Beach, Vincentia and Huskisson on the western side of the bay. Or try Callala Bay to the north.

THINGS TO DO IN JERVIS BAY

Activities centre around the bay itself or Boderee National Park. There are countless beaches for stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, snorkeling and fishing. Divers will be kept happy with over 30 dive sites in the bay. Surfers should head to the beaches in the National Park. Take the White Sands Walk from Vincentia Sailing Club to Hyams Beach. You’ll pass stunning beach, after stunning beach. Keep an eye out for the bay’s resident dolphins. Whale watching is as good as it gets at Jervis Bay. There are many vantage points along the coastline or take a whale-watching cruise to get up close and personal with these mighty creatures. Explore the Boderee Botanical Garden, the only Aboriginal-owned botanic gardens in Australia.

 

The National Parks surrounding Jervis Bay have bushwalking, cycling tracks, Indigenous culture, lookouts and maritime heritage for some back to nature exploring. The Jervis Bay Maritime Museum is worth a visit. Not just for the exhibitions. The grounds and buildings are great too.

BEST PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK IN JERVIS BAY

Dining in Jervis Bay reflects the laid back vibe of the area. Head to Wild Ginger for sunset cocktails and creative Thai dishes. But It’s not a visit to Jervis Bay until you’ve been to the Huskisson Hotel, known to everyone as the Husky Pub. Relax on the deck overlooking the water.

It will be tough to leave. The Gunyah Restaurant at Paperbark Camp is a quality dining experience with a difference. Dine amongst the treetops while indulging in quality cuisine. Be sure to book. It’s sometimes closed to outside guests.

Holidaymakers still get the twitch for good coffee to kick start their day. 5 Little Pigs in Husky is popular as is Albert N Miso in Vincentia. Hyams Beach Café is busy all day long. And the Huskisson Bakery does a roaring coffee trade.  The pies are pretty good too.

SHOPPING IN JERVIS BAY

Arts, crafts and beach boutiques are the focus of shopping in Jervis Bay. But you’ll also find Aboriginal craftmanship and quality artworks. The Huskisson Market is the second Sunday of the month with plants, unique arts and crafts, fresh produce, bric-a-brac and more. The monthly Jervis Bay Maritime Museum Twilight Market is held on the first Saturday of each month 3pm - 7pm.
